Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech
Upon arrival at Marrakech Menara Airport, you’ll be met by your guide and transferred to your riad or hotel in the heart of the Medina. After settling in, we’ll share a welcome lunch to go over the itinerary and answer any questions about the journey ahead. The afternoon is free to explore the souks, admire the intricate architecture of the Bahia Palace, or simply relax with mint tea. Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 2: Atlas Mountains Trek to Lake Ifni
We depart Marrakech early, heading into the High Atlas Mountains to the village of Imlil. Here, our mule team and local mountain guide will meet us. The trek begins with a gradual climb through Toubkal National Park, passing Berber hamlets and terraced fields. We’ll stop at the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch before ascending towards Lake Ifni — a stunning turquoise glacial lake set at 2,295m. Tonight, we camp lakeside under the mountain stars.
Day 3: From Mountains to Desert
After breakfast by the lake, we descend to Imlil and continue by 4×4 through the dramatic Ounila Valley and Aït Ben Haddou (a UNESCO World Heritage site). Stopping for lunch in Taznakht, we drive further south to Foum Zguid, where asphalt ends and the desert begins. Our off-road adventure takes us across dried lakebeds and stone desert to the towering dunes of Erg Chegaga. Overnight in a comfortable nomadic-style tent, complete with traditional music and stargazing.
Day 4: Camel Trekking in the Deep Sahara
The day begins with a desert sunrise before mounting camels for a trek deep into the dunes. As we move further from camp, you’ll feel the silence and vastness of the Sahara. Along the way, your guide will share stories of nomadic life and the desert’s wildlife. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch among the dunes before returning to camp for another night under the stars.
Day 5: Nomadic Culture & Mountain Views
After breakfast, we set out towards the Jbel Bani mountains. On route, we visit a nomadic family, where you’ll experience their hospitality and learn about their traditions, including bread baking in the sand. We also stop at a nomadic school, gaining insight into the challenges of desert education. The journey offers sweeping views of the mountains and desert plains. Overnight in a small desert lodge.
Day 6: Jbel Bani & Natural Pools
Today’s route takes us through winding desert passes, following ancient caravan trails. In a secluded spot, we reach a hidden natural pool, perfect for a refreshing swim. This rare oasis is surrounded by dramatic rock formations, making it a beautiful spot to relax before continuing our drive. We spend our final desert night in a peaceful village at the foot of the Jbel Bani.
Day 7: Journey Back to Agadir
We drive back towards the coast via Foum Zguid, with a break for lunch in Taznakht — known for its vibrant Berber carpets. Continuing west, we stop in Taroudant, often called “Little Marrakech” for its red walls and bustling souks. Our journey ends in Agadir by late afternoon, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or the airport.
Welcome to Foum Zguid Desert Tours, where every trip enriches not only your soul, but also the lives of the local tribes in Morocco’s Lake Iriki region.
